Without any doubt, Marquette is one of the greatest towns in the country for citizens who embrace the four seasons. Sugarloaf Mountain and Black Rocks are two of Marquette's most prominent landmarks, both residing on the shores of Superior.

What's Neat About Marquette?

An outdoor lover's dream, Marquette's infrastructure is set up for mountain biking, ATVs, fishing, hunting, hiking, kayaking, and even dog sledding.

A symbol of Marquette's hard-working history and culture, the ore dock out into the icy Superior waters gives a certain charm unlike anywhere else.

With Black Rocks, cliff jumping can be added to that list. And while Sugarloaf is not technically a mountain, there probably isn't a better place to catch a sunset or a panoramic view of Marquette's lakeshore.

The epitome of a sunny Yooper day!

The View From Black Rocks

Run a quick YouTube search on "Black Rocks," and the results are intriguing to say the least. As a pure adventurist at heart, I cannot help but wish I was cliff diving with what is presumably summertime NMU students. With a corresponding brewery as legit as the rocks themselves, the Black Rocks are a thrill junkie's summertime dream.

So, are panoramic views of Superior your thing? Check!

Overlooks of Marquette's city limits, including the Superior Dome and Ore Dock? Yup!

One of the best sunrise, sunset, and northern lights views in the area? Mmhhhhmmmm!

Fall colors for miles? Get some!

A relatively easy hike for a mountain (although technically not a mountain, it is around 1000 feet. Mountains are technically 2000 feet above sea level), Sugarloaf's 360-degree views of the U.P.'s copper country are unbeatable. During a windy January day, we ventured up Sugarloaf's "difficult" trail and chose the "easy" route for the descent. Approximately one mile of hiking, an incline, and stairs will bring you to this scenic summit.

Even though I wish the hike were longer, Sugarloaf Mountain is one of those iconic landmarks that I won't bypass when in the area. One reason is the easy access, and it's also a quick hike. Another reason Sugarloaf is hard to overlook is that the view is never the same—a storm, sunset, or fall colors can give a completely different perspective than what was experienced on the last excursion.

Travel Points For Marquette

  • If you haven't experienced Black Rocks Brewery, "Get yo' Life Together"! All jokes aside, this is one of the best breweries in Michigan and maybe the Midwest. My favorite beer in the world just happens to be from them: the elusive "Murray Project". It just so happens this is the home of Michelle's #1 brew, their Coconut Brown Ale. With 51K IPA, Grand Rabbits, and Honey Lav becoming progressively more popular, people all around are joining the Black Rocks movement!

  • For anyone staying in the Marquette/Munising area looking to fish, check out Arced Up Angling. They are unique in that they offer a variety of shore/watercraft fishing expeditions from beginners to experts looking to learn the area. Not only will you be put on fish, but picturesque views will also come into play. These guys know Yooper country as good as anyone!

  • The ultimate shore or peak meal is the ever-so-portable Pasty, so make sure to grab one of the Yoop's finest from Jean Kay's. Based in Marquette, these pasties are clutch for any hungry hiker or adventurer. If eating at the establishment, check out the original Jean Kay's “kickin' sauce.”... Ketchup as a pasty condiment will be obsolete after this magical potion hits your tastebuds.

  • If cliff jumping is on the itinerary, please use caution and check with local professionals before making the plunge. Water temps can drastically decrease based on wind direction no matter the season. The clear waters of Superior can be hard to judge concerning depth and if you're diving into shallow water, you'll have a bad time.

  • Follow Facebook pages like Great Lakes Aurora Hunters for the latest northern lights forecasts. Although not predictable weeks in advance, they will give alerts the day of a high probability forecast. Sugarloaf Mountain is a premier lookout for those wanting to catch a glimpse.

  • Presque Isle Park is a cool strip of land to walk or bike, adjacent to Black Rocks. The pier leads out into the abyss, offering plentiful views of the ore dock. Hawks, owls, deer, and other mammals call this park home. Check it out!

  • There are several waterfalls within the area worth venturing to (Dead River Falls is the closest). Check out our waterfalls page for more details!
